SpaceFest! 2015: Full line-up and festival teaser

Ladies and Gentlemen, on 4-5 December the SpaceFest! shuttle is entering the orbit for the fifth time! This next edition of the festival is also going to take place at Żak Club in Gdańsk, and will continue to revolve around shoegaze, space-rock and all psychedelic shades of alternative music. Last year, the face of our festival was Snowid, a mystical figure from the Polish woods. This December, we have chosen his sidekick as the informal patron of the festival: DJ Mushroom Man, the Catalyst of Cosmic Power, which is going to be unleashed again during the event.

We are in for a dose of live delicacies. The undisputed highlight of the first day are the legendary The Telescopes: a UK band who have been mining a unique anti-myopian seam of highly influential experimental, drone, noise, dream and psych for over 20 years. The group, represented by the famous Creation Records, has toured with the likes of Spacemen 3, Primal Scream and The Jesus and Mary Chain. Later on, Whipping Boy, Slowdive, Bleach, The Cranes or Ride all played some of their earlier shows supporting them.

The headliner of the second day of the festival is the Finnish group Kairon; IRSE!, whose fog-fuelled space jam sounds bring to mind 1970s progressive rock and 1990s alt-rock vibes. When the band’s guitars are not beautifully whining in shoegaze mode, roaring waves of krautrock crash over the audience. The band’s solid sound, with glassy vocals and stunning arrangements, may be experienced live on 5th December.

We will also see TAU, a project spearheaded by Shaun Nunutzi from Dead Skeletons, whom the SpaceFest! audience could hear two years ago. Their sound is a collage of trance-inducing, hypnotising soundscapes inspired by indigenous shaman songs. Other bands include Lights That Change – something for fans of ethereal dreampop and shoegaze, 4AD sounds and beautiful female vocals and DYN – a garage-psych-experimental lo-fi duo from Berlin.

The line-up also showcases some gems from Poland, such as Folder – an alternative group hailing from Tricity, who come back for just one show – especially to present the material from their debut 2009 album Red Lof during SpaceFest! Apart from Red Lof, we will hear songs from their first EP Inside.

Of course, we could not fail to mention our highlight: Snowid and DJ Mushroom Man, whose pagan-occult-cosmic electronic sounds are bound to bring us into a state of interstellar trance.

We are also going to showcase two groups selected in the young bands competition: Zimowa, a band from Wodzisław Śląski, whose music is a mix of fuzzy guitars and melancholy electronica with subtle, sensual vocals and Łotry from Krakow, presenting dirty, chilled out, psychedelic rock.

Hungry for more? For dessert, Dr Switchoff will serve us his eclectic DJ sets showcasing the best and worst in weird music from all over the world, using broken hi-fi equipment, analogue Soviet synths, field recordings and unidentified sound objects.

The concert part of the festival will traditionally be preceded by rehearsals of Pure Phase Ensemble, a group created especially for SpaceFest. For a week, the musicians are going to work together at Łaźnia 2 in Nowy Port and seek inspiration in the port landscape of this district of Gdańsk. We are sure to witness walls of guitars and distortions. This year, PPE’s frontman will be Australian singer and guitarist Hugo Race, known i.a. from The Bad Seeds and The True Spirit. The ensemble is also going to feature Polish musicians from Lord & The Liar, Ze Velocipedes, Daktari and C4030. The line-up will be completed by Karol Schwarz from Nasiono Records, who has been responsible for the coordination and musical cohesion of the PPE project from the very outset. We are going to hear the results of the rehearsals live on 5 December and the performance is going to be recorded and released in physical form in 2016.

Jot down the first weekend of December and visit SpaceFest! to embark on a unique journey together with the invited guests, a journey not just through time, but also – perhaps most importantly – through space. Come and pick music mushrooms with us!
