Rito is an artist collective the core members of which are four musicians: Piotr Pawlak, Michał Gos, Jacek Stromski, and Kuba Staruszkiewicz.

 

It’s three drum kits, three drummers coming from three different backgrounds, plus a prepared guitar, samples, and computers.

 

Rito is a trancey, meditational, and occasionally experimental affair based on emotions and energy. In Esperanto, the band’s name means “ceremony” or “ritual”. It’s no coincidence Rito hark back to archetypal rituals, practices, and types of expression found in many different cultures and meant to induce trance, that is a state characterized by intense experiences of mystical, energetic, and therapeutic nature.

 

The idea behind the collective is to provide a platform for musicians, dancers, as well as performance and visual artists.

 

During Piotr Pawlak’s retrospective at Sopot’s Teatr Wybrzeże, a 60 minute concert was recorded which later premiered on TVP Kultura. Currently, it can be watched at http://ninateka.pl/film/rito.

 

Nasiono Records have just released an album documenting the event.

Poetry tightens biceps!
The end of the stereotypical division into weedy artists and gormless muscleheads! From the very moment when the Tricity musicians and bodybuilders started working on a joint project, the term PHYSICAL CULTURE took on a brand new meaning!

“Bodybuilding Poetry” is not music for wimps. Each song on the album is like another fortifying exercise. If you perform the complete series – you’re a boss. If you repeat it – you gain respect. But only regular listening will transform you and will help keep you fit, both physically and spiritually.

Heavy Words
Everything began with an unusual blog, ciezkieslowa.pl, where Janusz, a bodybuilder from the Gdansk Żabianka estate published his poems. The sole fact that he made them public required a lot of courage – since he exposed his “soft underbelly” of an athlete to possible punches.. Moreover, they revealed his artistic soul, and yet it is known that blows directed at one’s soul are the most difficult to withstand, and at the same time the most painful. However, Janusz oblivious to criticism, published more poems dedicated to his lifelong passion, that is a gym workout.

From words to deeds
In a short time Janusz’s poems became a local curiosity. They drew attention of Tricity musicians associated with the Nasiono Records label, who in 2012 composed music for several poems and presented them live at the Streetwaves festival (the show was a sountrack for the Musicians vs Writers football match). And because the audience liked the idea it was decided to go ahead with the cooperation with Janusz and to prepare a collaborative album.

Music for the Muscles
„Bodybuilding Poetry” is the result of this cooperation. The album comprises several tracks – in most of them Janusz’s poems were used. The exceptions are the tracks “Tętent tętna” (“Throbbing Pulse”) and “Hanka i Hantle” (“Hannah and Dumbbell”), whose authors are respectively Bodybuilder Nihilist and Rapper Joozef, Gdansk poets indisputably inspired by the achievements of the bodybuilder from Żabianka. Musically, the songs are kept in very different styles, which may initially evoke the legendary album “POLOVIRUS” by Kury. However, in the case of ” Bodybuilding Poetry” this diversity has a slightly different ground: it shows that working out at the gym does not necessarily come down to mindless barbell lifting to the rhythm of rough and ready beats. It requires finesse and comes along with a whole range of emotions.

From mass to sculpture (and vice versa)
“Bodybuilding Poetry ” is a unique project and one of a kind. But will it contribute to the growth of physical fitness among music lovers? Or will it increase interest in alternative music among gym-goers? Hard to predict. So far it has allowed these two (so very different) worlds to meet. And it has proved that to achieve true harmony, both mass and sculpture are important

Pure Phase Ensemble is an eclectic rotating group of musicians, who come together every year in December during Gdansk’s illustrious SpaceFest!. The group’s makeup constantly changes, guided by the artistic vision of a new curator every year and directed by Anna Szynwelska and Karol Schwarz of Nasiono Records, who has been responsible for its musical cohesion from the very outset.

Anton Newcombe (The Brian Jonestown Massacre) led this current incarnation, along with with Emil Nikolaisen of Scandinavian rock band Serena Maneesh. The six other musicians involved this year were drawn from various Polish alternative bands. They include Karol Schwarz (7faz, KSAS), Olga Myslowska (Polpo Motel), Maciej Karminski (Jesien), Marcin Lewandowski (Judy’s Funeral, Castlings, Soon), Jakub Zwirello (Oslo Kill City, Szezlong), and Kacper Graczyk (Aiodine, coding).

Just ahead of SpaceFest!, Nasiono Records hosts a workshop, with musicians improvising to produce a set of unique songs. These intensive sessions take place at Laznia Centre for Contemporary Artin the city’s Nowy Port district, the artists gathering inspiration amidst its post-industrial atmosphere. The festival then culminates in this music being performed and recorded in real time for the inevitable album release.

 

Underlying the importance of festivals like this, Anton Newcombe says: “turn on the fucking radio…then turn it back off. That shit is bad for you. erm…lets have an urban contemporary rap festival everywhere and see what happens. Let’s have more DJ festivals…name one fucking important DJ now that people will respect in 30 years…name a record besides some classic jam that anyone at a club cares about. It’s all disposable. We are all trying to create our own culture because Western culture is dead”.

“I want to help establish SpaceFest! as one of the most important cultural events in Poland and totally relevant in Europe. I would like to be involved on a deeper level. I want to integrate culturally, artistically with all of Europe…well not the fascist part haha, not the neocons…not the Polanski eyes wide shut fuckers… but the artists”.

 

This latest SpaceFest! also resulted in a one-on-one collaboration between Anton Newcombe and PPE 6 member Kacper Graczyk – together, the two have released the track ‘Not Blowing Smoke Up Your Ass’. 

In past incarnations of Pure Phase Ensemble, the group was curated by Mark Gardener (Ride), Laetitia Sadier (Stereolab), Ray Dickaty (Spiritualized), Steve Hewitt (Placebo), Jaime Harding (Marion), Chris Olley (Six By Seven), and Hugo Race (The Bad Seeds, The True Spirit). 

SpaceFest! has figuratively transformed Gdansk into the intergalactic capital of Poland, presenting psychedelic music at its best with shoegaze, Krautrock and space-rock plus cosmic energy, intergalactic cats, forest goblins, psyched visuals, pagan disco and more. The workshop is organized by the Nasiono Association in cooperation with the Laznia Centre for Contemporary Art, andl is co-financed by the City of Gdansk.

„Bugibba” to koncept-album. Kolejne utwory, w mniej lub bardziej dygresyjny, mniej lub bardziej zawoalowany sposób, raz w pierwszej, raz w trzeciej osobie, za pomocą wysoce witalnych, plastycznych i ciasno zszytych rymów, opowiadają historię osobistego upadku artysty w latach młodości. Jest to swoisty pamiętnik z okresu dojrzewania, bakakaj, którego protagonista w końcu odradza się jak Feniks z popiołów, żeby w ostatnich utworach osiągnąć stan serca i umysłu tajemniczo zwany Bugibba. A czym jest ów stan? Może niech wskazówką będzie definicja z Wikipedii: „Bugibba to kurort na Malcie, popularny zwłaszcza wśród emerytowanych prezydentów wyspy.” Uprawnione są również skojarzenia z boogie i aktem gibania się. Oczywiście możliwe są też zupełnie inne interpretacje. Np. odzyskany spokój ducha i wewnętrzna równowaga, przywrócone poczucie kontroli i podmiotowości. Bity, które słyszymy na płycie, wyszły spod ręki Yannicka Dilée, poznanego w czasie pobytu w Paryżu, zajmującego się produkcją muzyki w domowym zaciszu. Resztą zajął się sam Kalafior w Trójmieście i okolicach, pisząc teksty i użyczając głosu, nagranego pod okiem (i uchem) Michała Miegonia w Sound 8 Gdynia. Mastering został wykonany przez Mikołaja Bugajaka (Audio-Games.pl).
